Brand Kit Best Practices Guide
What is a Brand Kit?
A Brand Kit in Canva is your organization's visual identity hub. It stores essential brand elements like logos, fonts, colors, templates, and more.
Brand Kits are available to users on Canva Pro, Teams, Business, Enterprise, Education, and Nonprofits.
Who creates Brand Kits?
Admins usually set up Brand Kits to create guardrails using settings and permissions. Brand designers manage the creative side—uploading logos, refining palettes, and setting typography. Sometimes, the roles overlap. What matters most is ownership and consistency.
Who uses Brand Kits?
- Brand designers: Create templates and branded assets that follow your guidelines.
- Members: Use Brand Kits to design consistently and on-brand.
Best practices for building a Brand Kit
From the Canva homepage, go to Brand and click on dropdown beside Brand Kit and choose between Create a new Brand Kit or Create personal Brand Kit. You can upload your brand guidelines and let Canva AI fill in the details or set it up manually.
1. Logos - Upload PNG files for flexible use, and SVGs for scalable vector use, especially for print. Add variations for different backgrounds.
2. Colors - Add primary, secondary, and neutral palettes. Include hex codes and labels like “Primary background” or “Accent.” You can also add color themes to define how those colors are applied across your design.
Use color themes to apply your brand colors consistently across backgrounds, elements, and text.
Accessibility tip: Make sure text and background colors have enough contrast.
To learn how to create and apply color themes, see Add and apply color themes in Brand Kit.
3. Fonts - Upload approved brand fonts. Set pairings (e.g., for headings and body text) and define sizes and weights for key use cases.
Note: You can’t yet set letter or line spacing via the Brand Kit.
4. Brand Voice - Add tone guidelines like “Professional, clear, and friendly. Avoid jargon.” You can also include sample taglines and snippets to guide consistent messaging.
5. Photos - Upload key brand photos. Make sure you have the rights to use them.
6. Videos - Let's teams store and use approved videos directly in Canva’s editor to keep designs on-brand and organized. It’s available on paid Canva plans with admin-controlled access. Learn more about uploading and using Brand videos.
7. Graphics - Add illustrations or icons in SVG format for print-ready scaling.
8. Icons - Add illustrations or icons in SVG format for print-ready scaling.
9. Charts - Add your brand colors to apply automatically when using charts from the Elements tab
Most categories have upload limits. This doesn’t apply to Colors, Fonts, Brand Voice, and Charts since they don't require file uploads. To expand other categories beyond their limits, link existing folders to your Brand Kit.
To link a folder:
- In any category, select Add to category.
- Click Folder.
- Search for your assets folder and click Link folder to confirm.
- Repeat to link multiple folders if needed.
Browse and manage brand assets
Keep your brand assets up to date and easy to use. You can browse, preview, and use Brand Kit assets more easily (including grid/list view, overflow menu actions, and linked folders). Learn how to browse and manage Brand Kit assets.
Customize your Brand Kit
Click the icon next to All assets to add more. Select Asset category to add more assets, or Section to group categories together.
To Rename or Delete, hover over the Asset category or Section name and click More icon.
Add Guidelines
You can add category-specific guidelines (like a Summary and Do's and Don'ts) within each asset category through the Add to category button.
For broader brand guidelines, go to the Guidelines tab and click Add guidelines. This opens the Canva editor, where you can capture your brand's story, values, standards, and asset usage in more detail. Include images, videos, or embeds for additional context. Click Done in the top corner to save.
Delete a Brand Kit
To delete a Brand Kit:
- Go to the All assets tab and click More icon next to the Brand Kit name.
- Select Delete.
- Read the warning message carefully.
- Check the box "I understand this action can't be undone" and click Delete Brand Kit to confirm.
