Use Magic Edit to add, replace, and modify photos

You can easily remove distractions or add new things to your photos with a few clicks. Magically transform your photos by brushing over the areas you'd like to modify and then describing what you want to add.

If you want to manually tweak the color of an object in your photo, see Adjusting image and video settings instead.

Use Magic Design

Find and use Magic Design to create first design drafts from the editor.

  1. From the
search bar, describe what you’d like to create.
  2. Select
    Media to add images.
  3. Select an image from your Uploads. You may also select
Choose files if you’d like to upload a new image from your device.
  4. Select See results.

Brush over your image

When you're in this mode, zooming and undoing or redoing brush strokes won't work.

  1. After selecting Magic Edit, go to the Brush tab and use your cursor or finger to brush over the part of the photo you want to edit.
  2. Change the brush size by dragging the slider to the left to make it smaller or to the right to make it bigger.
  3. Once done, click on Reset brushing to start again or Continue to proceed with the next step.

When brushing shapes, try to brush an area that is roughly the shape of what you're adding. For example:

  • Tennis ball - brush a round area
  • Pencil - brush an elongated area
  • Tree - brush an area roughly in the shape of a tree

Thin brushings can sometimes produce empty results. Also, remember to brush nearby elements to help get the perspective and direction of light.

For best results, try zooming in and moving around the image when editing. Learn more about mouse and trackpad gestures for brush tools

Describe what to generate

In the text box, type in what you would like to add or replace in the brushed area and click Generate.

Tips for best results:

  • Avoid adding flags, texts, faces, or hands—they may not look right.
  • When modifying colors or material of an object, try using similar prompts like: “change jacket to blue” or “make the jacket look like it's made of fur.”
  • To change the scene or image style, brush over the whole image or select all objects in it.
  • Brush only over the area you want changed. For instance, to add a hat to a person, brush only over the area where you want the hat to be.
  • Add one thing at a time and repeat the process. For instance, to add many balloons, add one at a time.
  • Avoid adding the size in the prompt. Brush a larger area instead. For example, don’t write “A large bird” but brush the entire area that you want the bird to occupy.
  • Avoid adding celebrities or popular brands as they may get blocked for copyright reasons.

Control access to Magic Edit in teams

If you’re a team admin, Teacher, or team brand designer, you can choose who can access Magic Edit in your team or class. Depending on the language set in Canva, some Team members may not have access to Magic Edit even if it’s enabled. Learn how to change your teams’ access to Magic Features.

Magic Edit limitations and best practices

  • Generated results sometimes have a light direction, color, or style that doesn't match.
  • Sometimes the generated result is empty, unexpected, or different from what you intended.
  • The brushed or selected part of your photo would be more pixelated than the surrounding image.
